Ornamental Peppers Win Big at LSU

Each spring and fall, LSU AgCenter horticulturists unveil a list of Louisiana Super Plants, which are evaluated and selected for their superior performance under Louisiana growing conditions. We’re incredibly proud to announce that “as an entire group” Ornamental Peppers from PanAmerican Seed have been inducted into the Louisiana Super Plants program.

The Louisiana Super Plant program highlights tough and beautiful plants that perform well in Louisiana landscapes. Louisiana Super Plants have a proven track record; they'vegone through several years of university evaluations and observations. Louisiana Super Plants are “university and industry approved.”

Judges named the flat-disc, crunchy and crisp Mad Hatter, as well as Candy Cane Red with its beautiful, green-and-white-to-red snack peppers as favorites for edible types. Midnight Fire, Hot Pops Purple, Chilly Chili and Calico were voted for superior ornamental-type peppers.

These varieties were recognized for their awesome tolerance for persistent heat and eye-catching range of foliage and fruit colors. After years of trying to identify the best of the best, the ornamental pepper group was named a 2022 winner!

“These plants are the perfect way to both spruce up the late summer landscape and celebrate the transition into fall,” noted the judges of their autumn induction.
